A track or straightedge keeps a long sheet cut dead straight, and a fine blade limits breakout in faced boards.

How this works
Inputs
Four questions, all with a default answer: the cut (rip along the grain, cross-cut to length, break down sheet goods, cut curves, joinery cuts, trim & fine finishing), the material, the quantity (one-off or batch) and the tooling available. There are no free-text inputs, so there is nothing to mistype.
Method
The recommendation is a deterministic lookup on cut × tooling — no scoring, no weighting, nothing hidden. Every row also stores the one-sentence reason shown with the result.

A batch on a powered row upgrades the primary to the stationary option where one exists, and adds: “Set up once, cut many: a stop or fence pays for itself on a batch.” A batch by hand adds: “A batch by hand is honest work but slow — consider the powered route.”

The material adds one note:
- Sheet (ply-MDF): Use sharp, fine-tooth — ideally carbide — blades and score the cut line to limit breakout. Manufactured boards make very fine dust: see the dust-control notes on the Sanding Disc Estimator.
- Hardwood: Dense hardwood wants a slower feed and a coarser rip tooth count; let the saw set the pace.
- Softwood: Resinous softwood can gum a blade; clean off pitch build-up to keep cuts straight.
One combination of answers adds a final note to the live result: when power tools are available, the job is a one-off and the recommended route is flagged as commonly hired, the calculator itself attaches a link to one external hire catalogue. That is the only external commercial link anywhere on this site. It exists nowhere in this page's own markup — the pure calculator creates it, gated on those answers, when a result is computed in your browser.

Worked example
CT-1: breaking down sheet goods, sheet material, a one-off job, power tools available. The sheet × power row recommends: Track saw — or circular saw with a straightedge — with a fine blade (40 T+) — with Jigsaw for small cut-outs as the alternative. The sheet-material note applies, with its link to the Sanding Disc Estimator's dust-control panel, and the tooth-count label is shown because the recommendation carries a tooth figure. These answers also pass the hire gate, so the live result carries the hire note — the worked example above deliberately does not, because it is rendered into the page rather than computed in your browser.
