Choosing timber for a project

There is no best wood — there is the wood that best fits this project, this budget and this bench. Five questions get you there faster than any species chart.

This guide is deliberately qualitative. Species datasheets full of hardness numbers and shrinkage coefficients exist elsewhere; what they rarely tell you is how to weigh those properties against each other for the thing you are actually making. The judgements below are workshop experience, labelled as such, and where a fact carries a superscript it is sourced in the ledger at the foot of the page. The one habit that outranks any of it: buy the board you can see and handle, not the species name on the rack label.

§1 QuestionsThe five questions

Workability. How will this wood behave under your tools — and your tools specifically? Hand-tool workers feel species differences far more keenly than machine workers. Straight-grained, even-textured species plane and pare predictably; interlocked or wild grain tears out and asks for sharper irons, higher cutting angles and more patience. Density matters to effort: a hard, heavy species resists every saw stroke and blunts edges faster.

Movement. Wood moves with humidity for the whole of its service life, across the grain much more than along it. The question is not whether your timber will move but whether the design allows it: wide solid panels, mitred frames and cross-grain constructions punish species that move a lot, and reward stable, well-seasoned stock. Quarter-sawn boards move less in width than flat-sawn ones from the same tree — a workshop rule of thumb worth paying for where stability matters.

Durability. Indoors, almost anything lasts. Outside, unprotected sapwood of any species fails first, and species differ enormously in how their heartwood resists rot. If a part will be wet and unpainted, natural durability or a proven finish regime is the design constraint — not an afterthought.

Cost. Price per cubic metre misleads; waste is where money goes. A cheap board full of knots that yields half its volume in clear cuttings costs more than an expensive clean one. Price the parts you can get out of the board, not the board.

Availability. In the UK, that means what your local yard or merchant actually stocks: typically European oak and ash, beech, sycamore, sweet chestnut and elm among the home-grown and European hardwoods; imported temperate species; and construction softwoods everywhere. A species your yard carries in the thickness you need beats a theoretically better one you must order blind.

§2 IndoorsIndoor furniture and fittings

Indoor work frees you from durability and hands the decision to workability, movement and looks. For a first substantial piece, a well-behaved, forgiving species — something straight-grained and even — teaches more and punishes less than a hard, wild-grained exotic. Beech and sycamore are the traditional workhorses for painted and utility work; oak and ash carry visible-grain furniture; softwood is honest and cheap for shop fittings and carcase work that will be painted. Match the species to the joint count too: a piece with much hand-cut joinery favours a species that pares cleanly.

§3 OutdoorsOutdoor projects

Outside, durability leads the weighing. Detail the design so water runs off and end grain is covered or sealed, whatever the species — good detailing extends any timber's life, and no species survives standing water in a joint indefinitely.

Nest boxes are a well-documented worked case, and the RSPB's material guidance is a sound starting point for small outdoor projects generally: use 15–18 mm timber, which insulates the box from cold and heat and resists warping4; exterior-quality plywood makes a lightweight box, hardwoods such as oak and beech are sturdier, and softwoods such as pine work but deteriorate more quickly4; avoid pressure-treated timber where wildlife will live4; and look for the FSC logo for Forest Stewardship Council-approved timber4. §4 Small workToys, treen and small parts

Small parts concentrate the workability question: a spinning-top, a peg or a drawer pull is nearly all edge and end grain. Close-grained, splinter-resistant species — beech and sycamore are the classics — turn, drill and round over cleanly and take handling well. For anything a child will hold, favour species with a record in toy making, keep finishes simple, and reject any board you cannot identify. Boldly figured species earn their keep in boxes and handles, where one striking offcut goes a long way.

§5 BendingParts that must curve

If the project includes a bent part, let the bend choose the species and buy for it specifically: straight grain, no runout, no knots, and — workshop experience, not published data — air-dried rather than kiln-dried stock where you can get it. §6 At the yardA yard checklist

  • Sight down every board for twist and bow — a straight board saves hours of flattening.
  • Check end grain: quarter-sawn for stability, flat-sawn for figure and width.
  • Reject through-knots, checks and wide sapwood bands unless the design absorbs them.
  • Buy for the cutting list with a sensible margin, not by the romantic armful — thewaste-reduction guide covers planning that margin honestly.

  • When two species both fit, take the one your tools and experience already know.
