Designing a workbench that fits you

A workbench is not a piece of furniture; it is a machine for holding work at the right height. Get the height right for your body and your work, and most other decisions soften.

Workbench advice fails when it hands you someone else's bench. The right height depends on your elbow, not a standard; the right mass depends on whether you plane or rout; the right vices depend on which hand holds the saw. This guide walks the decisions in the order that they earn: height first — with the planner that does the arithmetic embedded below — then the top, then the holding, then the habit that protects you from all the theory: mocking it up before you cut a single leg.

§1 HeightHeight is a trade, not a number

Every bench height is a compromise between force and sight. Work low and your weight gets over the tool: hand planing wants this, because the legs and back deliver force that arms alone cannot. Work high and your eyes get close to the work: marking out, carving and fine paring want that instead. One bench cannot do both perfectly, which is why the honest question is not "what is the correct height?" but "which work leads at this bench?".

The planner below reasons from your elbow height — measured directly if you can, or estimated from your overall height using a published population-average model — and then shifts a band from that datum by work style. The bands are a workshop rule of thumb, printed in the open: hand planing sits 150 to 100 mm below the elbow, joinery and assembly 100 to 50 mm below, power-tool work from 50 mm below up to the elbow itself, and detail work from the elbow to 50 mm above it. Treat the result as a starting point with a band around it, because footwear, posture and habit all move the number — the full method, rounding rules and limitations are on theplanner's own page.

If your work is genuinely mixed, plan for the low end and raise the workpiece, not the bench: a bench-on-bench for detail work, a thick board under a carving — riser fixtures are cheap, while a too-tall bench punishes every planing session.

§2 The topMass and stiffness, in general terms

After height, the top's job is to stay put and stay flat. Those are two different properties. Mass resists the bench walking and skittering under planing and chopping: a heavy top absorbs blows and lets momentum work for you. Stiffness resists flex between the legs, which is what makes a mid-span chop feel dead rather than springy. A thick slab delivers both at once, which is why the traditional pattern persists — but a stiff, well-braced base under a moderate top gets most of the way there, and mass can be added low on a shelf, where ballast helps stability most and never warps.

Flatness matters because the top is your largest reference surface: assemblies are checked against it and thin stock is planed on it. A top in workaday solid softwood that gets reflattened as it moves serves better than a glassy surface too precious to use. Overhang is a working decision too — enough beyond the legs to clamp all round, but not so much that the edge flexes under a holdfast.

§3 HoldingVice placement basics

Vices are handedness written in iron. The classic arrangement for a right-handed worker puts the face vice at the front left end — so a board held on edge extends to the right, supported along the bench, while the plane travels with the dominant hand — and the end vice at the right end, working a row of dog holes along the front edge to pinch work flat on the top. Left-handed workers mirror the whole arrangement; a shared bench takes the majority's side rather than a compromise that suits nobody.

Place the face vice so its fixed jaw lands flush with the bench edge, letting long work clamp against the front of the bench itself, and keep the front edge of the top clear of aprons or overhangs where they would stop a clamp's throat. If vices are a later upgrade, drill the dog holes and plan the reinforcement now — retrofitting into a finished top is miserable work. And spend time on holding before spending money: dogs, holdfasts, a planing stop and a batten do a surprising share of a vice's job.

§4 Mock-upThe mock-up-first habit

Every number in this guide — the planner's included — is a starting point, and the cheap way to test a starting point is a mock-up. Set a sheet of ply or an old door on trestles or stacked timber at the planner's suggested height, and work at it for a week: plane at it, saw at it, mark out on it. Your back and shoulders will file a more accurate report than any table of offsets. Shim it up or cut it down until the complaints stop; that height, not the printed one, is your bench height.

The mock-up settles more than height. A strip of masking tape marks where you keep reaching for a vice that is not there; the tools that pile up at one end tell you where the well or the shelf belongs. Build the mock-up's lessons into the real bench, and cut the legs a whisker long — sawing a little off later is a five-minute job, while adding it back is a new set of legs. Then build the simplest bench that holds your work, and let the second bench, years from now, inherit everything this one teaches you.
